Oman has stopped issuing and renewing work permits for expatriate workers over the age of 60, reversing a policy introduced in January 2022 that had removed the age ceiling for renewals, according to Gulf News, citing reporting by The Arabian Stories. Several expatriates said their employers’ renewal applications had been rejected in recent weeks, and a senior official familiar with the matter confirmed to the outlet that permits for workers over 60 are currently not being issued.
The 2022 policy had let companies retain experienced staff past 60 where Omanisation requirements were met and the roles were not reserved for Omani citizens; Labour Minister Dr Mahad bin Said Ba’owain said at the time it was meant to give employers greater flexibility. The latest reversal effectively undoes that position, and affected residents told The Arabian Stories the change has created uncertainty over their employment and residency status. Oman’s Ministry of Labour still lists work-permit renewal services on its website without a stated age threshold.
