The US just moved on three visa fronts at once. Here’s what’s actually confirmed.

The Trump administration took three distinct, confirmed actions on US visa policy in the same week, and it is worth being precise about which is which, because they affect different people in different ways. On 26 August 2026, the State Department paused all scheduled immigrant-visa interviews worldwide, telling applicants their appointments were being rescheduled with no new date given. Separately, the department is preparing to revoke the B1/B2 visitor visas of people who entered on those visas and later applied for asylum, in a move officials say could affect up to 200,000 people. A third, narrower action is unfolding specifically around South Africa, where refugee-screening staff have been reassigned.

The immigrant-visa pause covers green-card-track categories only — family sponsorship, employment-based petitions, and the Diversity Visa lottery, which has been halted outright — while ordinary tourist and business (B1/B2) visa processing continues unaffected by this particular measure. The State Department has attributed the pause to a “global training programme” for consular officers, aimed at applying the “public charge” rule (which bars entry to anyone likely to depend on US government assistance) more consistently. No end date has been given. The timing is not coincidental: the pause came days after a federal judge struck down a related policy that had suspended immigrant-visa issuance for people from 75 specific countries, ruling that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had exceeded his statutory authority. The universal, training-based pause reads as the administration’s alternative route to a similar practical effect after that legal setback.

Two further, separate actions: B1/B2 revocations and a South Africa-specific refugee push

The second confirmed action is unrelated to the interview pause in mechanism, even if it shares the same enforcement mood: State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott has said the department is coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security to identify and revoke B1/B2 visas — issued between 2016 and 2026 — of holders who later filed for asylum. Pigott was explicit that the number is not fixed at 200,000 and “will be done on a rolling basis,” so treat that figure as a reported ceiling on an open-ended process, not a confirmed final count. Officials cited by the Associated Press say people with pending asylum cases could be recategorised rather than immediately removed, but the administration’s own framing — “the largest single mass visa revocation in US history,” per reports citing State Department documents — signals the scale it expects.

The third, narrower thread is specific to South Africa. USCIS has reassigned every officer from its Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate onto two priorities: screening South African refugee applicants and investigating alleged noncitizen voters, according to a USCIS spokesperson. That reassignment is tied to the administration’s prioritisation of Afrikaner refugee applications — of the 10,258 refugees the US admitted between 1 October 2025 and 31 July 2026, 10,255 were South African, per the State Department’s own refugee report. A side effect confirmed in the same reporting: the US shut down routine visa operations in Durban from 1 August 2026, so KwaZulu-Natal residents now have to travel to Johannesburg or Cape Town for any US visa appointment that still requires one.

Zagdim’s View — If you’re mid-process on a US family- or employment-based green card, or the Diversity Visa lottery, the practical takeaway is that your interview is likely rescheduled with no confirmed date, not cancelled outright — and tourist/business (B1/B2) travel is not part of this particular pause. If you hold a B1/B2 visa and have a pending or past asylum application, the revocation process is live and rolling, not a one-time list, so it is worth confirming your specific status directly with a US immigration attorney rather than assuming the 200,000 figure does or doesn’t include you. Everything above is what US officials have confirmed on the record as of today; several pieces — the interview pause’s duration, the final B1/B2 revocation count, and how litigation plays out — remain open.
