Opening a UK Bank Account as an Overseas Resident: Identity, Address, and What to Check Before You Apply

There is no single fixed document checklist that applies to everyone opening a personal bank account in the UK. Whether you are already in the country or still abroad, your current residency status, whether you can provide proof of address, and whether you need a standard current account or a more basic arrangement can all change your application path.

Before you start gathering documents, three questions shape your application path: Are you already in the UK or still abroad? What is your current immigration status? And do you need a full current account, or a more basic arrangement to start? Your answers determine which institutions are relevant and what documentation they will expect.

The right starting point is not finding a list of recommended banks. It is answering three questions: what type of account do you need, what regulated category does your target institution fall under, and what proof does that institution currently accept?

This article focuses on preparing to open a personal everyday account. It does not compare products, interest rates, or business accounts, and it does not mean any institution is certain to accept your application.

Decide Which Type of Account You Need First

Eligibility criteria, identity verification requirements, and risk assessment standards for standard current accounts are set by each institution individually. Even with the right documents, acceptance is not guaranteed. What one bank accepts cannot be treated as a universal industry standard.

The UK also has a Basic Bank Account scheme. According to current HM Treasury data, this arrangement is primarily for people who are lawfully resident in the UK, do not have a bank account, or do not qualify for a standard current account. Government data lists nine designated banks as carrying these obligations. The current list is published on GOV.UK — check the most recent version, as it may be updated.

A Basic Bank Account is a conditional scheme, not an unconditional entitlement. Applicants must still pass identity and other required checks; banks may also decline applications under applicable rules. If you are still outside the UK or do not meet the lawful residency condition, a Basic Bank Account should not be assumed to be a guaranteed fallback route.

How Your Status and Location Affect Your Application

Non-UK nationals are not a single application category. Before gathering documents, consider your current situation to identify what you need to confirm with the institution:

Situation Confirm first Document direction
Already living in the UK Which identity and address documents does the target account accept? Identity, current address, residency status, tax residence
Recently arrived in the UK Does the institution accept alternative proof when no fixed address is yet available? Identity, entry or residency records, temporary or contact address details
Student Is there a dedicated student application route? Are there eligibility or document restrictions? Identity, residency status, institution details, and any additional requirements
Still outside the UK Does the institution accept overseas applications? Is it a UK domestic account or one based in another jurisdiction? Identity, location, tax residence, and where the product is based

This table is a questioning framework, not a guarantee of eligibility for any category. Arrangements for students, recent arrivals, and non-residents are particularly likely to vary by institution and product — check the target institution’s latest official pages before applying.

Understanding eVisa and Share Codes

As UK residency status moves progressively to eVisa digital records, it is no longer reliable to use an old physical BRP as a universal current answer. Applicants holding an eVisa can generate a share code through the GOV.UK View and Prove process.

Current official guidance states that a share code consists of nine characters (letters and numbers), is valid for 90 days, and can be reused within that validity period. However, this does not mean every bank must treat a share code as the only acceptable proof. Target institutions may still require a passport, address documentation, or other verification materials.

Organise Your Documents by Purpose, Not by Bank

Rather than copying a single bank’s document list, a more reliable approach is to organise your materials by what they need to prove, then check each item against the target institution’s current requirements.

Document category Purpose Confirm before applying
Proof of identity Verifies name, date of birth, and personal identity Which documents are accepted; whether originals or electronic verification are required
Address or contact details Confirms current place of residence or contact location Document date, name and address format consistency, alternative arrangements if no fixed address
Residency status Confirms UK residency status where applicable Whether an eVisa share code is accepted; whether additional documents are required alongside it
Account purpose Explains intended account use and expected transactions Whether income, everyday spending, or international transfer purposes need to be explained
Tax residence Completes applicable tax self-certification Whether tax residence and Tax Identification Number (TIN) are required and ready

Check that your name spelling, address format, and personal details are consistent across all documents. For overseas applicants, name spelling and format inconsistencies between your passport, address documents, and immigration records are a common source of delays — confirm these are aligned before you apply. If your passport, residency records, and address documents use different name formats, check with the institution what supplementary explanation is needed. If you do not yet have a fixed UK address, do not assume any employer letter, school letter, or temporary accommodation confirmation will be accepted by every bank. The more reliable approach is to ask the target institution directly: which alternative documents are accepted, whether a branch visit is required, and whether an address update will be needed later.

Know the Difference Between Bank Accounts and E-Money Accounts

Being able to receive a UK sort code and account number, a payment card, or a mobile app does not mean the account is necessarily a bank deposit. Understand the legal and regulatory category of the institution before you apply.

Institution type Common functions Protection to check
Bank or Building Society Deposit-taking, payments, and other banking services Verify the institution’s identity, and check whether deposits qualify under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) current rules
Authorised Payment Institution / Electronic Money Institution Payment or e-money services; some accounts may offer a local UK sort code and account number Check FCA registration status, how customer funds are protected, and whether FSCS deposit protection explicitly does not apply

Eligible deposits held with an authorised bank or building society may be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), but this still depends on the depositor, institution, and product meeting the scheme’s current rules. Customer funds held by an authorised payment institution or electronic money institution are generally subject to safeguarding arrangements, not FSCS deposit protection. Small Payment Institutions have different requirements — check their protection arrangements separately. If you are considering using a smaller payment provider, check its FCA registration category carefully before depositing funds.

You can verify an institution’s regulated status and permissions on the FCA Financial Services Register, then check separately on the FSCS website whether deposit protection applies. Appearing on the FCA Register does not mean the account will be approved, nor that all products are covered by FSCS.

Before You Start: What to Check During the Application Process

The application channel — whether website, mobile app, or branch — does not indicate the level of verification involved. Before you start, confirm:

  1. Whether the institution accepts applications from your current location
  2. Whether a UK phone number or address is required
  3. What format identity and address documents need to be uploaded in
  4. Whether branch attendance is required to complete verification
  5. Which official channel any request for additional documents will come through
  6. Whether the institution will explain the reason and complaints process if the application is unsuccessful

A declined or unsuccessful application at one institution does not mean another institution will make the same decision, nor that applying for a different product will necessarily succeed. If you have a dispute about how your application was handled, use the institution’s own complaints procedure first. Cases that fall within the relevant scope can subsequently be referred to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). FOS reviews complaints on a case-by-case basis and does not order accounts to be opened or reinstated as a standard outcome.

Tax Residency and Funds: What This Article Does Not Cover

The account opening process may include a tax residence self-certification. It is worth organising your current tax residence in advance, along with your Tax Identification Number (TIN) where applicable. Whether and where information is reported is determined by the applicable automatic exchange of financial account information rules and your individual circumstances — it cannot be generalised from nationality or immigration status alone.

Beyond identity and address documents, institutions may also ask about account purpose, expected transactions, or fund details. A full Source of Funds and anti-money laundering (AML) review is a separate topic; this article does not establish a universal document checklist and is not a substitute for each institution’s individual case verification.

Before You Apply: A Quick Checklist

  • Confirmed whether you need a standard current account, a Basic Bank Account, or a payment/e-money account
  • Checked the target institution’s latest eligibility criteria and location restrictions
  • Organised documents by identity, address, residency status, account purpose, and tax residence
  • Confirmed whether an eVisa share code is accepted and whether additional documents are required
  • Verified the institution’s type and permissions on the FCA Register
  • Checked FSCS applicability separately — not based on account features alone
  • Confirmed which official channels will be used for additional document requests, queries, and complaints

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply without a fixed UK address?
It depends on the institution. Different banks have different requirements for address or contact proof, and there is no single list of alternative documents that all banks accept. Ask the target institution directly what proof it currently accepts, whether a branch visit is required, and what the process is for updating your address later.

Does an eVisa share code replace passport and address proof?
Not necessarily. A share code is used to share immigration status information, but banks may still require a passport, address documentation, or other verification under their own processes. Confirm with the specific institution whether they accept a share code and what it needs to be accompanied by.

Is an e-money account the same as a bank account?
No. Electronic money institutions provide payment or e-money services, but customer funds are generally subject to safeguarding arrangements, not FSCS deposit protection. Check the FCA regulated status and FSCS applicability separately before applying.

Does having all the documents mean my account will be approved?
No. Institutions will still process applications against their identity verification, eligibility, and other risk criteria. A Basic Bank Account is also a conditional scheme, not an unconditional approval.

If my application is refused, can FOS order the bank to open an account?
FOS handles individual banking and payment service complaints that fall within its scope, but outcomes depend on the case. Using the complaints process does not mean an account will be opened or reinstated.

Not sure whether to look at a standard current account, a Basic Bank Account, or a payment/e-money account? Ask us via Zagdim Ask — include whether you are already in the UK, your immigration status, whether you have a fixed UK address, and the main purpose of the account.
