mBridge Cross-Border Payment Platform Nears Commercial Stage with Planned Hong Kong Operating Entity

The multi-CBDC platform for cross-border payments, mBridge, is preparing to move from its pilot phase to commercial operations. According to official and media reports, a new operating company based in Hong Kong is planned to oversee the rollout, and the system may offer significantly lower costs compared to traditional networks like SWIFT. Here’s what is known and what remains unconfirmed.

mBridge Moves From Pilot Toward Commercial Launch

mBridge — the cross-border payment platform connecting the central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) of China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia — is reportedly nearing its transition from a pilot project to a full commercial service. This was confirmed by a press release from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and reported by the Financial Times.

mBridge originated as a multi-CBDC experiment under the BIS Innovation Hub, developed jointly with the participating central banks before progressing through pilot and trial phases. An executive from the HKMA noted that releasing the minimum viable product is a sign of the platform’s maturity and readiness for wider use. The HKMA’s June 2024 press release confirmed that mBridge had reached the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) stage and that participating banks had conducted real-value transactions in preparation for wider use. For businesses, this points to a potential new tool for faster, more direct settlements between participating jurisdictions.

Planned Hong Kong Operating Entity and Launch Timeline

To manage the commercial rollout, plans are underway to establish a new operating entity based in Hong Kong. According to reports from the Financial Times, this legal entity would serve as the governance and operational hub for the commercial platform. Two details, however, remain unconfirmed. On incorporation status, while plans for the entity are reported, formal incorporation has not been confirmed. On timing, no official launch date has been announced.

mBridge Fees Versus SWIFT: Potential Cost Advantage

A key benefit reportedly offered by mBridge is a significant reduction in transaction costs. Media reports from the Financial Times and Aiying License & Compliance indicate that cross-border settlement fees on mBridge could be about 50% of those on traditional systems like SWIFT.

mBridge Trial Transaction Volume

The platform’s pilot phase has reportedly processed a significant volume of transactions. Aiying License & Compliance reported that mBridge has processed approximately 470 billion RMB in trial transactions.

How mBridge Access Works for Banks and Corporates

mBridge operates on a two-tier model. Participating central banks issue their own CBDCs onto the platform and supervise access, while commercial banks hold wallets on the mBridge Ledger and settle transactions directly with one another, removing the correspondent-banking intermediary. Corporates do not access mBridge directly; they instruct their bank, which executes the on-platform settlement on their behalf. For the commercial phase, reporting indicates commercial banks will be able to participate under the supervision of their central banks.

What mBridge Means for Cross-Border Businesses

For companies frequently trading with counterparts in China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, mBridge could offer a faster and cheaper alternative to current banking channels, accessed through their existing bank rather than the platform directly. A Hong Kong operating entity, if established as planned, would provide a clearer regulatory point of contact and governance structure.

Key Points to Consider Before Using mBridge

  • Participation is limited to specific jurisdictions. mBridge currently involves the participating central banks — China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia — and their authorized institutions.
  • Direct access is bank-only. Licensed commercial banks approved by their local central bank transact on the platform; corporates transact through their bank, not the platform directly.
  • The fee reduction is not guaranteed. Reports suggest a roughly 50% cost saving, but this is not an official figure, and the final fee structure will be confirmed at commercial launch.
  • The launch has no fixed date. The platform is moving toward commercial operation, but no start date has been announced.
  • The Hong Kong entity is planned, not confirmed. Reporting describes a planned operating entity that is not yet confirmed as formally incorporated.

Zagdim Analysis

  • On fees, a 50% reduction would represent a substantial operational saving for institutions handling high-volume cross-border payments, and could make mBridge a competitive alternative within the corridor it serves — though the figure should be treated as an estimate pending the confirmed fee structure at launch.
  • On trial volume, the reported figure suggests real-world capability and engagement from participating institutions, and an established proof-of-concept reduces novelty risk for organisations weighing entry into the commercial network.

mBridge’s move toward commercial operation could reshape how banks — and, indirectly, the businesses they serve — settle payments across China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. For now, much of the detail remains reported rather than officially confirmed, so it is worth watching how the Hong Kong entity and launch timeline take shape before drawing firm conclusions.
