Introduction to Converting a Thai Driver’s License
Since June 2025, regulations for converting a Thai driver’s license have changed: holders of an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a foreign driver’s license can no longer directly exchange them for a Thai license. All applicants must pass written and practical driving tests. Whether you are a short-term visitor or a long-term resident, if you plan to drive in Thailand, you need to apply for a local Thai driver’s license to comply with the law. This guide explains the latest application process, required documents, test details, and key tips to help you successfully obtain your license.
📌 Required Documents
If your original national driver’s license is not in English, you must provide a translation in English or Thai. Additionally, prepare the following documents:
- Valid national driver’s license from your home country
- Valid International Driving Permit (IDP)
- Certificate of Residency *Can be obtained from Immigration (free, about 25 minutes) or replaced with a Work Permit
- Medical Certificate *Obtained from a clinic (about 100 THB, includes blood pressure check and a few health questions)
- 2 passport-sized photos
- Copy of passport information page
- Copy of the latest visa or visa extension page
📌 Application Process
1️⃣ Obtain a Certificate of Residency
Visit Immigration to apply. Some DLT (Department of Land Transport) offices may require this document.
2️⃣ Obtain a Medical Certificate
Available at clinics; the check-up is simple.
3️⃣ Visit Your Local DLT Office (addresses at the end)
In some areas, you can book an appointment using the DLT App (e.g., in Bangkok).
- Download on Google Play or Apple App Store
4️⃣ Submit All Required Documents
5️⃣ Take the Tests (varies by DLT office):
Written Test: Must pass a test on Thai traffic rules. You can watch instructional videos on the DLT e-learning website in advance and print the completion certificate.
Practical Driving Test: Includes actual driving maneuvers.
Other Tests:
- Brake/Reaction Test
- Color Blindness Test
- Depth Perception Test
6️⃣ Pay the Fee and Receive Your License
Temporary license (valid for 2 years): approximately 200-300 THB
Full license (valid for 5 years): 505 THB
📌 Important Notes
✔ An International Driving Permit (IDP) is generally valid for 90 days in Thailand. After this period, you must convert to a Thai driver’s license.
✔ Since June 2025, IDPs or foreign licenses cannot be directly exchanged for a Thai license; you must take both the written and practical tests.
✔ Motorcycle license rules: If your home country license does not include a motorcycle endorsement, you cannot directly obtain a Thai motorcycle license. You must take additional training courses and pass the tests.
📌 License Renewal
A 2-year temporary license can be exchanged for a 5-year full license within three months before its expiration.
When upgrading to a 5-year license, you do not need to retake the written or practical tests, but you must still submit the required documents.
- A Thai driver’s license can serve as a multi-purpose ID for domestic flights, hotel check-ins, and other general identity verification (policies vary by hotel and airline; check in advance).
⏳ Estimated Time
The entire process time varies by location and office efficiency, but it can take as little as half a day to a full day. Since requirements may differ slightly between offices and applicant numbers can be high, it is advisable to book an appointment and allow sufficient time.
As specific requirements at DLT offices may change, it is recommended to check directly with your local DLT for the latest information.
