DTV Visa Story 2: A Freelance Trader's Choice for Love

As more and more people choose to apply for the Thailand Digital Nomad Visa (DTV, Thailand Destination Visa), we want to share some real stories. These stories are not only about the Thailand DTV visa itself, but about why people choose to change the pace of their lives at different stages and under different circumstances. This installment shares the story of a freelance trader.

The Story

Jay (a pseudonym), 33, is a freelance stock trader. For him, work is not tied to any location — as long as he has a computer and an internet connection, he can complete his daily analysis and trading. He trades stocks, funds and futures, which gives him a more flexible lifestyle than a traditional office job.

Over the past few years, he has traveled frequently between his home country and Thailand, because his girlfriend is Thai and the two have been together for years. He has kept up his investing life while enjoying daily life in Thailand — the markets, the street food and the relaxed atmosphere.

But he had always relied on a tourist visa. On his most recent entry, an immigration officer reminded him that he would need a long-term visa to enter again next time, which prompted him to look for a longer-term solution for traveling to Thailand.

For Jay, the flexibility of the Thailand DTV visa fit exactly what he needed: one stay of up to 180 days, with multiple entries allowed within five years. He can live with his girlfriend in Thailand for extended periods, and also return home to see his family when needed — a perfect fit for his rhythm of “free trading, free living.”

ZDelp Case Analysis: Why Was the Thailand Destination Visa (DTV) Right for Jay?

When Jay (a pseudonym) came to ZDelp for a consultation, we first clarified three key points about his background:

  • Work style: Full-time freelance trader (stocks, futures, funds) with stable income but no fixed employer or employment relationship
  • Lifestyle: Long-term travel between his home country and Thailand, in a long relationship with a Thai partner
  • Goal: To live in Thailand long-term while keeping the flexibility to travel freely, and to stay connected with family back home

At first, we also assessed several common visa options:

  • Tourist Visa (TR): Only 60–90 days, which cannot support a long-term life
  • Non-B Visa (work visa): Requires employment by a Thai company, which does not fit his freelance work style
  • Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR): Long validity, but a high bar (finances, position, professional background) that was not his current focus

After the analysis, we confirmed the Thailand Destination Visa (DTV) best matched his needs, for the following reasons:

1. A Perfect Match Between Free Work and Free Residence

Jay’s work is not tied to any location and only requires a stable internet connection. He also has enough investment income and savings to support himself without needing to work in Thailand.

2. Support for a International Relationship and a Flexible Lifestyle

DTV allows a single stay of 180 days, a 5-year validity and multiple entries, letting him live with his partner in Thailand long-term while still easily returning home to visit family and stay connected.

3. Filling the Application Gap Left by Having No Fixed Employer

Compared with a traditional salaried employee, a freelance trader typically lacks an “employer’s letter.” So for his case, we built a “proof of self-sufficiency” plan centered on financial records, bank asset statements and investment income statements to make sure the application would pass review.

What We Did

We looked closely at Jay’s life plans, financial situation and trading arrangements, helped him consolidate his financial documents, account fund flows and income records, and prepared application documents that met the DTV standard. After he was successfully granted the DTV visa, we also helped him arrange for a Thai driver’s license (Thai license plate) in Bangkok for daily commuting and getting around, formally beginning his long-term chapter of life in Thailand.
