Partner content | Information support from LH Bank
Your immigration status matters when applying for a personal bank account in Thailand. LH Bank publishes document lists for four main groups: retirees, Thailand Privilege members (formerly Thailand Elite, often called the Elite visa), employees and business owners. It also sets out supplementary requirements for dependants. LH Bank does not accept account applications from people on tourist visas, DTVs, visas on arrival or visa-free entry. If you hold another visa type, contact the bank’s customer service team first.
Does Your Visa Fit LH Bank’s Requirements?
LH Bank’s FAQ for foreign customers explicitly excludes tourist visas, DTVs and visas on arrival. Its Chinese-language FAQ also lists entry without a visa.
Many readers living in Thailand on a DTV expect to be able to open an account during their stay. A DTV allows a long stay, but bank account eligibility follows a separate set of rules: check both independently. These are LH Bank’s requirements; other banks may take a different approach.
Match Your Status to the Additional Documents
Start with the basic documents in the next section, then add the documents for your status below.
| Status | Visas Listed by the Bank | Additional Documents |
|---|---|---|
| Retiree | Non-Immigrant O-A or O-X; a visa stamp issued for retirement purposes; or a Non-Immigrant or Long Stay visa accompanied by embassy or immigration certification | One of the following: an identity document from your home country or an identity document issued by the Thai government |
| Thailand Privilege member | Non-Immigrant, SE or PE | One of the identity documents above, plus proof of income |
| Employee, including Global Talent | Non-Immigrant or Smart Visa | A work permit issued by a Thai government agency |
| Business owner | Non-Immigrant B | One of the identity documents above, plus proof of income, such as business ownership or operating documents |
| Dependant — supplementary requirements | Non-Immigrant O | Proof of family relationship, such as a marriage certificate, may be provided. If accompanying a foreign national, the corresponding documents for the primary visa holder are also required. |
If you lack the additional identity document listed above, the bank sets out supplementary options. For example, Thailand Privilege members may provide a membership card or membership certificate; retirees may provide embassy or immigration certification issued within the past month.
Prepare the Basic Documents
- A valid passport.
- Proof of your residential address in Thailand. It must show your name and a valid contact address. The bank lists a yellow house registration book (Thor Ror 13); a lease signed by both parties together with a copy of the landlord’s identity document signed by the landlord; water or electricity bills in your name; or a residence certificate issued by an embassy or immigration office. Hotel addresses and post office boxes are not accepted.
- A Thai mobile number registered in your name, together with proof of ownership issued by the mobile service provider within the past month. The one-month limit refers to the date of the proof, not how long you must have held the number.
Book, Wait for Confirmation, Then Visit the Branch
- Request an appointment. Use LH Bank’s branch appointment form on its website or email. Appointments must be made during business hours, at least 24 hours in advance and no more than 30 days ahead.
- Wait for confirmation. After you submit the form, the bank’s customer service team will contact you to confirm. Submitting it does not mean your appointment is confirmed.
- Attend in person. Foreign customers must visit a branch themselves to open an account; they cannot complete account opening online.
If you need Chinese-language support, book ahead to arrange Chinese-speaking staff at Lumpini Office (G floor, Q.House Lumpini; Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4:30pm) or One Bangkok branch (4th floor, Parade Zone; daily, 11am–7pm). Chinese-language support may not always be available for walk-in visits. As of 25 October 2026, the bank’s website lists 21 branches that can assist foreign customers with account opening.
Your Checklist Before Travelling
- Does my visa fall within the statuses LH Bank lists? If not, have I asked the bank’s customer service team?
- Are my passport, proof of address and mobile-number ownership document ready, with the mobile document issued within the past month?
- Have I prepared the additional documents for my status: identity documents, proof of income, a work permit or proof of relationship?
- After submitting my appointment request, have I received the bank’s confirmation?
From Zagdim’s Experience Helping Readers
These are general observations from helping readers open bank accounts in Thailand. They are not limited to LH Bank, and requirements may vary between banks and branches:
- If you stay with friends or family, you will usually need a separate lease. If the property belongs to a family member, include proof of your relationship.
- The rent stated in the lease should be reasonable. The person signing it generally needs to be you or an immediate family member.
- Bring the originals of all documents. If you also want a foreign-currency account, you can arrange it during the same visit.
- Incoming transfers from overseas may incur fees, depending on the bank and the transfer method.
- The bank decides whether to approve an account after reviewing the application. Nobody can guarantee approval.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open an LH Bank account with a DTV?
No. LH Bank’s website states that tourist visas, DTVs and visas on arrival are not accepted for account opening.
Can I open an account online before arriving in Thailand?
No. You can request an appointment online, but you must visit a branch in person to open the account.
How long does my lease need to be?
LH Bank’s current account-opening page for foreign customers does not specify a minimum lease term. In Zagdim’s March 2026 interview, the bank said the lease needed to be for at least one year. The requirements may have changed, so confirm the lease term when booking.
