(March 2026) — The Thai Immigration Bureau has recently announced a temporary emergency measure to assist foreign nationals who are unable to depart Thailand due to disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict that began on 28 February 2026.
As the conflict has led to airspace closures and flight cancellations in certain regions, some foreign travelers have been unable to leave Thailand before the expiration of their permitted stay. To ease the difficulties faced by affected individuals while ensuring compliance with Thai immigration regulations, the Immigration Bureau has introduced a series of temporary measures.
Overstayers Departing Thailand May Receive Fine Waivers
According to the Thai Immigration Bureau, foreign nationals who overstay due to flight cancellations or airspace closures, but are only remaining in Thailand temporarily while arranging their departure, may have their overstay fines waived upon exit from the country (Overstay Fine Waiver).
The measure is intended to prevent travelers from facing additional legal or financial penalties due to circumstances beyond their control.
Temporary Stay Extension Available for Those Needing to Remain in Thailand
Affected individuals who need to continue staying in Thailand may apply for a Temporary Stay Extension with the Immigration Bureau.
The procedure includes:
- Settling any overstay fines in accordance with the law
- Immigration officers may grant a discretionary stay extension of up to 30 days
Each extension cannot exceed 30 days per approval.
Required Documents for Extension Applications
Applicants seeking a temporary stay extension must submit the following documents:
- TM.7 form (Application for Extension of Temporary Stay)
- Copy of passport or travel document
- A supporting letter from the applicant’s embassy or consulate confirming the necessity of the extension
If the embassy letter cannot be obtained, immigration officers may instead record a written statement explaining the reason for the extension request.
Applicants are also required to complete the following forms:
- STM.2
- STM.2/1
- STM.9
Measure Effective Immediately Until Travel Conditions Normalize
The Thai Immigration Bureau stated that the measure takes effect immediately and will remain in place:
Until international flight operations and travel conditions return to normal, or
Until the Thai government issues a new official order to revise or terminate the measure
