1. Introduction

As Golden Visa policy keeps loosening, and the UAE continues to attract highly skilled talent and entrepreneurs from around the world, more and more foreign residents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are building “family reunification” into their long-term plans. In the past, many work visa holders came to the UAE alone to build a career, but that is quietly changing — many now want to bring a spouse, children, or even parents to settle together, for a more stable life and a stronger sense of belonging.

In practical consultations, the questions we’re asked most often include: Can a spouse work? How much income do you need for a dependant visa? Can my parents be sponsored? These seemingly simple questions actually involve multiple factors — visa type, status restrictions, proof of income and legal conditions.

According to official GDRFA data and figures from several UAE-based immigration consultancies, since 2023 dependant-visa applications have grown steadily by about 12% a year, with the sharpest increase coming from full-family sponsorship applications driven by Golden Visa holders.

2. Who Can Apply for Family Sponsorship

Not every foreigner living in the UAE is eligible to sponsor family members. Under current policy, only holders of certain types of long-term residency visas have the legal standing to sponsor a spouse, children or parents.

Basic Status Requirements for the Main Applicant

The main applicant types currently eligible include:

  • Employment Visa: a formal employee of a company registered in the UAE.
  • Golden Visa: covering the investment, professional-talent and entrepreneurship long-term residency routes.
  • Green Visa / Freelancer Visa: in some cases, such as meeting an income threshold and holding certain documents, this can also qualify for sponsorship.

Which Family Members Can Be Sponsored

Under UAE rules, the following relatives can be sponsored through the proper process:

  • Spouse: requires an officially translated and certified marriage certificate.
  • Children:
    • Minor children can all be sponsored.
    • Adult sons can be sponsored up to age 25 (beyond that requires an explanation of special circumstances).
    • Daughters can be sponsored with no age limit as long as they remain unmarried.
  • Children with special needs: no age limit, but requires medical and guardianship documentation.
  • Parents: requires complete proof of relationship and financial documents, and proof of sponsoring both parents together (sponsoring only one requires an additional explanation).

Income Threshold and Financial Requirements

Family sponsorship has no “occupation restriction,” but there is a clear income threshold that applies to any sponsor, in any emirate:

  • At least AED 4,000/month with no employer-provided accommodation, or
  • AED 3,000/month with employer-provided accommodation.

To sponsor parents, a higher level of financial proof is generally required, typically at least AED 10,000/month, plus adequate living space (an Ejari contract) and health insurance.

If you’re not sure whether your visa category qualifies for family sponsorship, ask Zagdim to help you work it out.

3. How to Apply for a Family Sponsorship Visa

Applying for a UAE family sponsorship visa is not especially complicated, but every step affects the progress and outcome of the application. Below are the five most important steps in practice — follow them in order, and pay particular attention to deadlines and document completeness.

Step 1: Confirm Your Main Visa’s Validity and the Income Threshold

Before preparing your application, first confirm that the main applicant’s own legal residency status qualifies. Generally, the main visa (such as a work visa or Golden Visa) must be valid with at least 3 months remaining to be eligible to sponsor family members.

At the same time, check whether you meet the minimum income standard (such as AED 4,000 plus accommodation), especially for a spouse or children’s application, since this directly affects whether the rest of the process can proceed smoothly.

Step 2: Prepare Basic Family Member Information and Documents

Once eligibility is confirmed, you can start organizing the required documents. Details vary somewhat by relationship type, but generally include:

  • A copy of the family member’s passport (valid for at least six months)
  • A recent photo with a white background
  • A birth or marriage certificate (translated and notarized)
  • The main applicant’s proof of salary, tenancy contract and Emirates ID

Step 3: Apply for an Entry Permit

Next, you need to apply for an entry permit for the family member through an official channel, choosing one of the following:

  • Submit online through GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (federal level)
  • Go to a local Amer Center / typing center for assistance submitting the application

Processing generally takes 2–5 working days. Once approved, you’ll receive an Entry Permit, and the family member can formally enter the UAE to continue the process.

Step 4: Medical Exam and Emirates ID Application

Once family members arrive in the UAE, anyone 18 or older must go to a designated government medical center for a health check, including screening for communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV. Some occupations may require additional tests.

Once the medical exam is complete, you can move to the Emirates ID application stage. First-time applicants must go to an ICP office to complete biometric registration (fingerprints and facial recognition), followed by the card production process.

Step 5: Complete the Visa Stamp and Residency Permit

Once the medical report and Emirates ID process are complete, all materials can be submitted to GDRFA or ICP for the final visa issuance. Once approved, the residency visa is stamped into the family member’s passport, formally completing the application.

Family visas are generally valid for 1 or 2 years, and are renewable at expiry; family members of Golden Visa holders receive a visa matching the main visa’s term (5–10 years).

4. What Documents Each Type of Family Member Needs

Preparing documents is the key to a smooth UAE family sponsorship application. Beyond the “common documents” required of all family members, each relationship type has its own specific proof required. Below are the three main categories to help you prepare fully in one pass.

Common Documents (Required for All Family Members)

Whether sponsoring a spouse, children or parents, every family sponsorship application requires the following basic materials:

  • A valid passport copy (at least 6 months remaining validity)
  • A recent color photo with a white background (meeting ICA standards)
  • An Entry Permit (arranged in advance by the main applicant)
  • A medical exam report (for family members 18 and older, completed at a designated medical center inside the UAE)
  • Emirates ID application data (including photo, fingerprints and biometrics)

Passport copies issued outside the UAE cannot be handwritten formats — a clear, focused color scan is recommended.

Spouse: Proving the Marriage

To sponsor a spouse, you must prepare a translated and formally certified marriage certificate:

  • The original marriage certificate must be translated into Arabic
  • After certification by your home country’s foreign ministry, it must be further certified by a UAE embassy or consulate abroad
  • Finally, it must pass MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) certification within the UAE

Certification formats and processes vary by country, so it’s advisable to start the translation and consular certification process 2–4 weeks in advance.

Children: Age and Schooling Status Must Be Clear

Documents for sponsoring children vary by age group, but generally include:

  • Birth certificate (also requiring translation and bilateral diplomatic certification)
  • Vaccination card / health record (some emirates may require this)
  • If already in school, it’s advisable to also prepare proof of enrollment or a copy of the student ID

Daughters have no age limit as long as unmarried; adult sons in principle can only be sponsored up to age 25.

Parents: Proving the Relationship and a Higher Financial Bar

Sponsoring parents is a special category requiring stricter additional documentation:

  • Proof of the main applicant’s income, generally at least AED 10,000–20,000/month (varies by emirate)
  • Proof of the family relationship (such as the main applicant’s birth certificate, requiring bilateral certification)
  • If sponsoring only one parent, a death certificate or NOC (waiver statement) for the other
  • Proof of health insurance and an Ejari (tenancy) contract showing adequate living space

Documentation for parents is comparatively more involved, and requires the main applicant to provide complete financial proof — it’s worth consulting a professional advisor to check document completeness.

5. Family Sponsorship Visa FAQ

Whether this is your first time or you already hold a Golden Visa, almost every applicant asks a version of these six common, practical questions.

Can I Apply for a Spouse and Children’s Sponsorship at the Same Time?

Yes, and it’s advisable to handle them together. This not only saves administrative time, but also reduces duplicate document submissions and costs, making the whole process smoother.

Do Golden Visa Holders Always Need to Show Proof of Income?

Generally not. The Golden Visa is built around financial freedom and asset flexibility, so there is no mandatory income threshold when sponsoring a spouse or children — though you still need to submit relationship documents such as a marriage certificate or birth certificate.

Can a Sponsored Family Member Work?

Yes, but only after applying for an additional Work Permit. For example, if a spouse wants to be formally employed in the UAE, the employer must help apply to MOHRE for a “Relative Work Permit” — this doesn’t require converting residency status, but does need formal approval.

Can Parents Be Sponsored?

Yes, but the conditions are noticeably stricter. Beyond providing proof of AED 10,000–20,000 monthly income, you must also show proof of housing (an Ejari contract) and health insurance. If sponsoring only one parent, a death certificate or waiver (NOC) is required.

How Often Does the Visa Need to Be Renewed?

This generally depends on the main visa category. A traditional family visa is usually valid for 1 to 2 years, renewable repeatedly; if the main applicant holds a Golden Visa, family members can receive a visa valid for up to 5–10 years, with no need for frequent renewal.

If the Main Applicant Changes Jobs or Loses Their Job, Does the Family Visa Lapse?

Yes, it’s affected. A dependant visa is tied to the main applicant’s legal residency status — if the main visa lapses, the family visa loses its basis. In that case, you must reapply for a qualifying visa or complete a status conversion within the required period (generally within 30 days), or risk overstay penalties or being required to leave the country.

6. Common Mistakes

Even when conditions are met and the process goes smoothly, many family sponsorship applicants still make mistakes in the details, leading to requests for more documents, delays, or even a lapsed visa. Below are common mistake types drawn from real cases, with suggested fixes, to help you avoid these risks in advance.

1. Marriage Certificate Not Translated or Certified

Many first-time applicants assume they only need to submit the original marriage certificate from their home country, but the UAE explicitly requires that all non-Arabic documents must:

  • First be certified by the home country’s foreign ministry
  • Then certified by a UAE embassy or consulate abroad
  • Finally undergo local MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) certification within the UAE
  • And be translated into Arabic

This process generally takes 2–4 weeks, so start early.

2. Overlooking the Entry Permit’s Validity Window

Many applicants assume that once they’ve entered, they can take their time on the visa stamp and status change — but in fact:

  • The Entry Permit is valid for only 60 days
  • If the medical exam, Emirates ID and residency visa stamp are not completed within that window, it will be treated as overdue

Start Steps 4 and 5 as soon as possible after entry, and arrange the medical exam and biometric appointment carefully.

3. Not Understanding How Different Visa Types Affect Sponsorship

Golden Visa, Green Visa and work visa holders are all eligible to sponsor family, but the rules aren’t identical. For example:

  • The Golden Visa has no income threshold, suiting a one-time application to sponsor the whole family long term.
  • The Green Visa still requires financial and employment proof, and some freelancers need additional documents.

Be sure to clarify your own visa type and the corresponding conditions before applying — don’t apply the wrong rule set.

4. Overlooking Children’s Age and Special-Circumstance Recognition

Under current policy:

  • A son can only be sponsored up to age 25
  • Beyond that, proof of still being a student or unable to support themselves is required
  • An unmarried daughter has no age limit

If a child is approaching the age cutoff, it’s worth preparing supporting documents such as proof of student status or medical documentation at the same time, to avoid the application being returned.

Getting a visa approved isn’t just about complete documents — timing and details matter too. Ask Zagdim if your situation raises a similar question, and we can help you work through it.

7. Takeaway

Whether you hold a Golden Visa, a work visa, or are planning your future path to relocation, the UAE’s family sponsorship system opens up more possibilities for families. It not only brings loved ones closer, but is also an important foundation for a stable, long-term life. Successful applications depend not just on meeting the conditions, but on managing the timing — from the entry permit to the medical exam, from the ID application to the visa stamp, every step matters.
