Overview of Thailand’s Visa Types
Thailand is one of the world’s most popular destinations for relocation and travel, offering a wide range of visa types that cover everything from short-term tourism to long-term residence, work, entrepreneurship and other special needs. Depending on the applicant’s purpose and eligibility, Thai visas fall into six broad categories, each with further sub-types. Because some visas overlap in function — for example, the “digital nomad visa” under the Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR) also allows the holder to work in Thailand, while the DTV visa, currently the most commonly applied-for option, can be applied for on the basis of studying in Thailand or working as a freelancer — each visa has its own advantages, and applicants can choose the type that best fits their needs for greater flexibility.
1. Retirement Visa (Ages 50 and Above)
Who This Is For:
- Foreign nationals aged 50 and above.
- Those planning to live in Thailand long-term and enjoy retirement.
Visa Options and Requirements:
- Retirement Visa (Non-Immigrant O-A / O-X):
- Age Requirement: Applicants must be 50 years of age or older.
- Financial Proof:
- Non-Immigrant O-A Visa: a bank deposit of at least THB 800,000, or monthly income of at least THB 65,000.
- Non-Immigrant O-X Visa: a bank deposit of at least THB 3,000,000, held for at least 1 year.
- Health Requirement: a health certificate showing none of the diseases prohibited under Ministry of Public Health Regulation No. 14 B.E. 2535, such as leprosy, tuberculosis, drug addiction, elephantiasis, or third-stage syphilis.
- Insurance Requirement: health insurance meeting Thai government requirements, with coverage of no less than THB 3,000,000 (about USD 100,000) per policy year — the standard in effect since 1 October 2021, which replaced the earlier THB 40,000 outpatient / THB 400,000 inpatient coverage requirement.
- Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR):
- Age Requirement: No age limit.
- Financial Requirement: LTR has four sub-categories with different thresholds. The Wealthy Global Citizen category requires at least USD 1,000,000 in global assets, plus a mandatory investment of at least USD 500,000 in Thailand (which can count toward that USD 1,000,000). The Work-from-Thailand Professionals and Wealthy Pensioner categories instead use an annual income threshold of at least USD 80,000. - Insurance Requirement: health insurance coverage of at least USD 50,000.
- Thailand Elite Visa:
- Application Requirements: no criminal record, and payment of a membership fee (the Bronze tier’s 5-year membership currently costs THB 650,000).
- Financial Requirement: no specific income or deposit requirement, but a one-time membership fee is required.

2. Remote Work and Freelance Long-Term Stays (No Age Limit)

3. Starting a Business in Thailand
Who This Is For:
- Entrepreneurs or foreign nationals intending to set up a company in Thailand.
Visa Options and Requirements:
- SMART Visa:
- Industry Requirement: applicants must work in an innovative industry recognized by the Thai government (such as technology, energy, medical, etc.).
- Financial Requirement: proof of investment or a business plan worth at least USD 200,000.
- Professional Requirement: proof of relevant professional qualifications (such as a degree or work experience).
- Business Visa (Non-Immigrant B Visa):
- Company Sponsorship: an offer or invitation letter from a Thai company is required.

4. Long-Term Work
