DTV Visa Story 1: An IT Engineer's Career Change

As more and more people choose to apply for the Thailand Digital Nomad Visa (DTV, Thailand Destination Visa) today, we want to share some real stories. These stories are not only about the Thailand DTV visa itself, but about why people choose to change the pace of their lives at different stages and under different circumstances. This installment shares the story of a former IT engineer, Aming.

Aming’s Story

Aming (a pseudonym), 29, worked in the IT department of a foreign-invested company for ten years. His daily life revolved around a computer — building systems, adding features and fixing bugs. Although his income was stable, stress and overtime had become the norm, and the repetitive routine made Aming want a different way of life.

In February this year, he resigned. His reason for leaving was not only burnout, but also wanting to give himself a period of “real rest.”

Besides his job, he also had two “hidden identities”:

1. A long-term side interest in stock investing, managing his own funds with a stable investment return.
2. A love of cooking, and he had even thought about one day opening a small cooking workshop.

Aming said: “I wanted to stop for a while somewhere sunny, with a lower cost of living, and see what else I could do.”

He chose Thailand — for its markets, the smell of its streets, and an atmosphere that lets people settle down. More importantly, the flexibility of the DTV visa’s timeframe fit exactly what he needed: one stay of up to 180 days, with multiple entries allowed, keeping this flexibility for a full five years. For Aming, this meant he could live in Thailand for a few months, travel abroad, then come back anytime to continue his “gap year.”

ZDelp Case Analysis: Why Was the Thailand Destination Visa (DTV) Right for Aming?

When Aming came to ZDelp for a consultation, we didn’t immediately recommend the Thailand Destination Visa (DTV). Instead, based on his background and goals, we first compared several common Thai visa types in full:

  • Non-B Visa (work visa): Requires employment by a Thai company and a work contract, which did not fit his current status of “not wanting to work.”
  • Education Visa (ED) (student visa): Requires full-time enrollment in a course, which could not offer the freedom to arrange his life and travel.
  • Tourist Visa (TR) (tourist visa): A short stay period (60–90 days) that could not support the gap-year pace he wanted.
  • Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR) (long-term resident visa): An extremely high bar for finances and professional background; since he was on a career break, he did not meet the requirements.

After the analysis, we judged that DTV best matched his needs, for three reasons:

1. Financially Independent, No Need to Rely on Employment in Thailand

Although he had left his job, he had long managed his own investment account with a stable income stream, letting him fully support himself.

2. Seeking Space and Personal Exploration in Life

After years of high pressure, he wanted to pause, focus on resetting mentally and physically, and explore interests like cooking, without being tied down by a fixed job or course.

3. High Flexibility for Entries and Exits, Matching a Gap-Year Rhythm

DTV offers a single stay of 180 days, a 5-year validity and multiple entries, letting him arrange his travel and life freely, without being bound by a class schedule or work contract.

What We Did

After confirming DTV was the best-fitting option, we looked closely at Aming’s life plans, work arrangements and financial situation, tailored a DTV application plan for him and helped him prepare all the documents and procedures. After he was successfully approved for the visa, we also helped him find an ideal rental unit in Bangkok and a suitable coworking space, formally beginning his chapter of life in Thailand.
