How to Ride Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link (ECRL): Opening Date, Stations, Travel Times, Fares and Tickets

When Can You Ride the East Coast Rail Link? Target Opening by 12 December 2026, With Tickets on Sale in Mid-November

According to Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) on 19 October 2026, the first phase of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), from Gombak to Kota Bharu, is targeted to open by 12 December 2026, subject to safety approvals, with one-way fares from RM60 and tickets on sale in mid-November.

On 19 October 2026, MRL chief executive Darwis Abdul Razak held a press briefing in Gombak to update the public on testing, travel times and the fares approved by Cabinet. The national news agency Bernama and Sin Chew Daily reported the briefing the same day, and The Star followed on 20 October with “First phase of ECRL to open by Dec 12”. The line links Selangor with Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan on the east coast, and is the most significant new transport option for people living in Kuala Lumpur who travel east.

This guide uses the briefing as a starting point and covers the ECRL timeline, its 16 stations, travel times and fares by route, concessions, how to buy tickets and how to reach Gombak station. The timetable, fares for other stations and ticketing details will only be released in mid-November, and this is flagged where relevant.

Key Points

  • Who should pay attention: foreign residents and long-stay visitors in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (including MM2H holders), travellers planning trips to Kuantan, Terengganu, Kota Bharu or the east coast islands, and people who work on the east coast and travel to Kuala Lumpur regularly.
  • The first phase of the ECRL is targeted to open by 12 December 2026, subject to safety approvals; fault-free running tests start on 23 October, and trial operations run throughout November.
  • One-way starting fares: RM60 from Gombak to Kuantan (KotaSAS station), RM95 to Kuala Terengganu and RM125 to Kota Bharu, with dynamic pricing; Express trains stop at only four stations and reach Kota Bharu in about four hours.
  • Tickets go on sale in mid-November, when the full timetable and the remaining fares will be published; check whether your destination has Express stops before booking.

East Coast Rail Link Timeline: From Testing to Ticket Sales and Opening

Each row below has a different source:

Date Milestone Source
25 August 2026 Train testing begins; more than 50,000 km covered by October MRL CEO (Bernama, 19 Oct)
October 2026 Phase 1 is 98.16% complete MRL CEO (Bernama, 19 Oct)
16 October 2026 Cabinet approves fares and the dynamic pricing mechanism MRL CEO (Bernama, 19 Oct)
From 23 October 2026 Fault-free running tests MRL CEO (Bernama, Sin Chew, 19 Oct)
November 2026 Trial operations, simulating faults and emergencies MRL CEO (Bernama, Sin Chew, 19 Oct)
Mid-November 2026 Ticket sales open; full timetable and other fares published MRL CEO (Bernama, 19 Oct; The Star, 20 Oct)
By 12 December 2026 (target) Gombak–Kota Bharu passenger service begins, subject to safety approvals MRL CEO (Bernama, 19 Oct)
December 2027 (expected) Phase 2, Gombak–Port Klang, completed; operations in January 2028 Transport Minister Anthony Loke (NST, 14 Aug)

In August 2026 the target for Phase 1 commercial operations was still January 2027; the October update brought it forward to mid-December. MRL was clear, however, that 12 December is a target that depends on safety requirements and approvals.

East Coast Rail Link Route and Its 16 Stations: Express Trains Stop at Only Four

Phase 1 runs east from Gombak to Kuantan in Pahang, then north along the coast through Terengganu to Kelantan, with 16 stations. The station order and stopping pattern below are from The Star’s report of 20 October 2026, citing MRL:

No. Station Express Transit
1 Gombak Stops Stops
2 Bentong — Stops
3 Temerloh — Stops
4 Maran — Stops
5 Paya Besar — Stops
6 KotaSAS (Kuantan) Stops Stops
7 Kuantan Port City — Stops
8 Cherating — Stops
9 Chukai — Stops
10 Kemasik — Stops
11 Dungun — Stops
12 Kuala Terengganu Stops Stops
13 Bandar Permaisuri — Stops
14 Jertih — Stops
15 Pasir Puteh — Stops
16 Kota Bharu Stops Stops

Two points to note: the Express stop for Kuantan is KotaSAS, in Kuantan’s new administrative city rather than the town centre, and there is a separate Kuantan Port City station served only by Transit trains. For smaller stops such as Cherating or Dungun, you need the Transit service.

East Coast Rail Link Travel Times and Fares: Gombak to Kuantan From RM60, Kota Bharu From RM125

The fares below are the Cabinet-approved one-way starting fares reported by Bernama on 19 October 2026; travel times are from MRL’s briefing as reported by Sin Chew Daily the same day (the Kota Bharu times were also reported by The Star):

Route Express time Express from Transit time Transit from
Gombak–Kuantan (KotaSAS), 209 km 1h 27m RM68 2h 5m RM60
Gombak–Kuala Terengganu, 378 km 2h 54m RM110 3h 51m RM95
Gombak–Kota Bharu About 4 hours RM147 Up to about 5 hours RM125

Starting fares apply in both directions. MRL says fares for other stations will be announced when sales open in mid-November.

Dynamic Pricing: RM125 Is a Starting Fare, Not a Fixed Price

Cabinet approved a dynamic pricing mechanism on 16 October, similar to airlines: fares vary with travel time, demand and seat availability, and MRL says there are safeguards against excessive increases. At the briefing, MRL’s CEO explained that RM125 is the starting economy fare for the Gombak–Kota Bharu Transit service, not the price of every journey. In general, dynamic pricing means peak-time and late bookings may cost more; the exact rules will be set out in mid-November.

Travel Classes and Concessions

According to Bernama, trains will offer economy, premium economy and business classes. The fares above are economy starting fares; other class fares have not been announced. Concessions, also from Bernama’s 19 October report:

Who Concession
Children aged 2–12 Half price
Malaysian citizens aged 60 and over Half price
Persons with disabilities holding valid OKU cards Half price
Government pensioners Half price
Students aged 13–24 40% off

The report specifies that the senior discount is for Malaysian senior citizens. Whether foreign long-stay residents or international students qualify for concessions has not been stated; check the fare rules published in mid-November.

How to Buy ECRL Tickets and Get to Gombak Station

Tickets: On Sale on the ECRL Website in Mid-November

According to The Star, the full timetable and all fares will be published on the official ECRL website (ecrl.com.my) when sales open in mid-November. As of 20 October 2026, the following had not been announced:

  • The exact date and time ticket sales open
  • Sales channels beyond the website, such as an app, station counters or ticket machines
  • The full timetable, including daily frequency and first and last trains
  • Fares between other stations, and premium economy and business class fares
  • How far dynamic fares can rise
  • Whether foreigners can use concessions, and what identification is needed to buy tickets
  • Luggage rules and refund or change policies

Getting to Gombak Station

Gombak is the western terminus of the line, in Selangor just north of Kuala Lumpur. According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke in August 2026, the station connects with the LRT Kelana Jaya Line and the 24-hour Gombak Integrated Terminal (an intercity bus terminal), with elevated platforms, waiting areas, a business class lounge, convenience stores, covered walkways and parking. The most direct route from central Kuala Lumpur is the LRT Kelana Jaya Line to its Gombak terminus; follow on-site signage once the station opens.

Phase 2: Gombak to Port Klang

Phase 2 extends the line from Gombak to Port Klang. According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke in August 2026, it is expected to be completed in December 2027 and start operating in January 2028, with stations at Serendah, Puncak Alam, Kapar and Jalan Kastam. Until then, Gombak is the line’s western terminus.

Common Misconceptions About the East Coast Rail Link

  1. Misconception: the line will definitely open on 12 December. MRL describes this as a target that depends on safety requirements and approvals. Tip: avoid locking in mid-December plans until tickets go on sale and an official announcement is made.
  2. Misconception: fares shared on social media are the official fares. MRL warned in early October that circulating fare figures were inaccurate; the official starting fares are those approved by Cabinet on 16 October and announced on 19 October. Tip: rely on MRL and the ECRL website.
  3. Misconception: RM60 or RM125 is the price of every trip. These are dynamic starting fares that vary with time, demand and seats. Tip: book early for peak periods.
  4. Misconception: the Kuantan station is in the town centre. The Express stop is KotaSAS, in the new administrative city. Tip: plan your onward transport before you travel.
  5. Misconception: Express trains stop everywhere. Express trains stop only at Gombak, KotaSAS, Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bharu; the other 12 stations are Transit-only. Tip: check your destination before booking.

Scenarios: How Three Types of Travellers Can Use the ECRL

Scenario one: a retired MM2H couple in Kuala Lumpur planning a weekend in Kuantan. They can take the LRT Kelana Jaya Line to Gombak and change to an Express to KotaSAS, about 1 hour 27 minutes, from RM68 one way; the Transit takes about 2 hours 5 minutes from RM60. Reports describe the senior half-price fare as for Malaysian citizens, so whether foreign seniors qualify will depend on the rules due in mid-November. KotaSAS is not in the town centre, so they should arrange onward transport in advance.

Scenario two: a family of four heading to Kota Bharu for the year-end holidays. The Express takes about four hours, with economy fares from RM147; the Transit takes up to about five hours, from RM125. Children aged 2–12 pay half price. Because of dynamic pricing, holiday fares may be above the starting price, so it pays to confirm plans soon after sales open in mid-November, and to keep plans flexible in case the opening date moves.

Scenario three: a foreign employee in Terengganu who returns to Kuala Lumpur once a month. Gombak to Kuala Terengganu takes 2 hours 54 minutes by Express, from RM110, or 3 hours 51 minutes by Transit, from RM95. Anyone living near smaller stops such as Chukai or Dungun will need the Transit service. Once the timetable is out, compare the time and cost against driving and intercity buses.

East Coast Rail Link FAQ

When will the East Coast Rail Link open?

According to MRL on 19 October 2026, Phase 1 from Gombak to Kota Bharu is targeted to start carrying passengers by 12 December 2026, subject to safety requirements and approvals. Fault-free running tests start on 23 October, trial operations run through November, and tickets go on sale in mid-November. The actual opening date will be confirmed by MRL.

How much are East Coast Rail Link fares?

The one-way starting fares approved by Cabinet on 16 October are RM60 (Transit) and RM68 (Express) from Gombak to Kuantan’s KotaSAS station, RM95 and RM110 to Kuala Terengganu, and RM125 and RM147 to Kota Bharu. Fares are dynamic and vary with time, demand and seat availability. Fares for other stations are due in mid-November.

How long does the ECRL take from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu?

From Gombak, the Express takes about four hours, stopping only at KotaSAS and Kuala Terengganu on the way; the Transit calls at all 16 stations and takes up to about five hours. Gombak is just north of Kuala Lumpur and can be reached on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line.

Where can I buy East Coast Rail Link tickets?

According to The Star, the full timetable and fares will be published on the official ECRL website (ecrl.com.my) when sales open in mid-November. As of 20 October 2026, other sales channels such as an app or station counters, and the exact sales date, had not been announced.

Are there concessions for foreigners on the ECRL?

The reported half-price concessions cover children aged 2–12, Malaysian citizens aged 60 and over, persons with disabilities and government pensioners, with 40% off for students aged 13–24. The senior concession is specified as for Malaysians; whether foreign residents or international students qualify has not been stated. The child concession was not reported with a nationality condition.

What is the difference between Express and Transit on the ECRL?

Express trains stop only at Gombak, KotaSAS, Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bharu, so they are faster; Transit trains call at all 16 stations and are slower but cheaper. For example, Gombak to Kuala Terengganu takes 2 hours 54 minutes by Express from RM110, or 3 hours 51 minutes by Transit from RM95.
