DTV Visa Application Story: The Lin Family’s Choice to Pave the Way for Their Children’s International Education

As more people apply for the Thailand Digital Nomad Visa (DTV, Thailand Destination Visa), we want to share some real stories. These stories are not just about the DTV visa itself, but about why people choose to change their pace of life at different stages and under different circumstances. This edition shares the story of Mr. Lin and his family of four.

The Story:

Mr. Lin (pseudonym), 48, is an executive at his own company, managing a team and daily operations, but with relatively flexible work arrangements. His wife is a full-time homemaker dedicated to the family. They have two children: a 12-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old son.

They have long held the idea of providing their children with a more international education, paving the way for future studies in the UK. After researching different locations, they ultimately chose to settle their family in Bangkok. This decision was driven by the city’s international atmosphere and its excellent international school resources. They focused on three British-curriculum international schools: Harrow International School Bangkok, Bangkok Patana School, and Wellington College International School Bangkok.

With this plan, their younger son could enter Junior School (Year 3–4), and their daughter could transition into Senior School (Year 7–8), gradually adapting to the international curriculum and preparing for future overseas studies. This was the most critical factor in their decision to move to Bangkok.

📝 Zagdim Case Analysis: Why is the Thailand Destination Visa (DTV) Suitable for the Lin Family?

The situation of Mr. Lin (pseudonym) and his family represents another typical type of DTV applicant: family applicants with education as their core consideration. In our discussions with them, we focused on three key points:

① Education Planning × Long-Term Goals

Mr. Lin wants both children to smoothly transition into the British education system, so he chose international schools in Bangkok as a stepping stone. The DTV offers a five-year validity period, allowing the family to maintain continuity in their educational plans during the critical middle school years, without academic disruptions caused by short-term visas or visa uncertainty.

② Family Life × Visa Flexibility

Unlike traditional work visas, the DTV does not require employment by a Thai company. This allows Mr. Lin to continue managing his business remotely while living with his family. His wife can focus on the household, and the children can concentrate on their studies. The DTV allows stays of up to 180 days per visit with multiple entries, significantly reducing the hassle and risk of frequent visa renewals.

③ Cost-Effectiveness × Supporting Resources

Compared to other countries, Bangkok offers better value in terms of international school tuition, living costs, and healthcare. Combined with property options and family-friendly amenities, the DTV is a flexible yet stable solution for middle-class entrepreneurial families whose primary goal is education.

During our discussions, we first reviewed several common visa types:

  • Tourist Visa (TR): Short stay (60–90 days), requiring frequent border runs and extensions, which is too unstable for families with children.
  • Non-B Visa (Work Visa): Requires employment by a Thai company. Mr. Lin manages his own company and has no local employer, making him ineligible.
  • ED Visa (Education Visa): Children can apply based on enrollment, but parents still need to rely on other visa types, making it difficult to solve long-term residency for the whole family.
  • LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident Visa): Has very high financial and professional requirements, a complex process, and is not specifically designed for families with school-age children.
  • ED Visa (Education Visa) & Guardian Visa: Tied to the child’s enrollment and require annual renewal, lacking the long-term flexibility of the DTV.

After comprehensive consideration, the DTV visa emerged as the best option: it can solve the residency needs of the entire family at once, offering the flexibility of 180-day stays × 5-year validity × multiple entries, making it ideal for education-oriented families that also need cross-border flexibility.

📍 What We Did
In this case, role of Zagdim went beyond visa application. We assisted Mr. Lin’s family with:

  • Assessing Education Planning Needs: Matching suitable international schools and enrollment timelines based on the children’s ages.
  • Designing the DTV Application Strategy: Using business income and family financial status as core evidence to ensure a smooth application.
  • Lifestyle Support Recommendations: Providing advice on school-adjacent communities, properties, and healthcare resources to help them find a suitable neighborhood for the whole family.

Ultimately, Mr. Lin’s family successfully obtained the DTV visa and is now using Thailand as a true “educational springboard and second family base,” allowing their children to confidently transition into the international curriculum and prepare for future overseas studies.
