Remote Work for an Overseas Employer: Does It Qualify You for LTR?
September 23, 2026

Tags: Thailand LTR visa

“I work remotely for an overseas company and my income clears USD 80,000 — LTR should be no problem, right?” Understanding Work-from-Thailand Professionals (WFTP) this way is only half right. This category’s conditions are three parallel sets of requirements: one on personal income, one on employer eligibility, and one on the common financial security requirement — if the employer doesn’t meet the threshold, no amount of personal income makes you eligible for this category. The “key” in the title refers to that employer requirement. This article breaks down all three sets of requirements word for word.

Condition Set One: Personal Income

Average personal income of at least USD 80,000/year over the past two years; or at least USD 40,000/year with a master’s degree. Two details, read exactly as the official wording states them:

  • The measure is “average over the past two years” — not simply meeting the threshold in a single year;
  • The USD 40,000 bracket is tied to a master’s degree — the two go together, they are not independent options.

Condition Set Two: Employer Eligibility

Your employer must be one of the following:

1. A company listed on a stock exchange;
2. A private company that has been operating for 3+ years and has revenue of at least USD 50,000,000;
3. A subsidiary of either of the above.

This condition tests the company, not you: the company’s listing status, years in operation, and revenue scale. Two boundaries to note: the calculation basis for the revenue threshold follows BOI’s current announcements — don’t determine it yourself; and the documentation required to prove employer eligibility follows BOI’s current requirements — confirm before submitting.

In practical terms: if you work for a startup, a small company, or as a freelancer serving individual clients, check the employer condition first — meeting the personal income condition cannot substitute for the employer condition.

Condition Set Three: Common Financial Security

Same choose-one-of-three as the other categories: medical insurance of at least USD 50,000; or Thai Social Security; or a bank deposit of at least USD 100,000 maintained for at least 12 months.

Two Comparisons People Often Confuse

HSP is another category with a similar income structure, but its conditions are independent. Highly-Skilled Professionals has a similar income structure (average of USD 80,000 over two years, or USD 40,000 plus a master’s degree in science or technology), but the employer requirement is a Thai or foreign company, higher education institution, research center, or government agency in a targeted industry (the targeted industry list follows BOI’s current announcements) — HSP and WFTP have fully independent conditions; check each against its own literal wording.

Digital Work Permit: WFTP is not included. The LTR benefits list’s “with Digital Work Permit” entry explicitly notes the Work-from-Thailand category is excluded — remember it literally: the benefits package you get under WFTP does not include a Digital Work Permit; the 17% personal income tax also applies only to the HSP category.

What if the Employer Doesn’t Meet the Threshold?

If you work remotely for an overseas company but your employer is a small company or you work as an independent contractor, check the DTV visa instead: its Workcation category covers digital nomads, remote workers, and freelancers, with a financial threshold of at least THB 500,000 — note that its stay structure is different (5-year validity, up to 180 days per entry, with one possible extension available). Compare it against your own stay pattern and circumstances.

A Few Misunderstandings

Misunderstanding One: “Remote work + USD 80,000 income = qualifies for WFTP.”

There is still the employer condition: a listed company, or a private company operating 3+ years with USD 50,000,000 in revenue, or a subsidiary of either — the conditions are parallel, and missing any one means you don’t meet this category’s conditions.

Misunderstanding Two: “A freelancer with high enough income can also use WFTP.”

This category’s conditions test the employer’s eligibility — for a freelance arrangement serving individual clients, check the employer condition’s literal wording first; if it doesn’t fit, DTV’s Workcation category explicitly covers freelancer scenarios.

Misunderstanding Three: “Getting WFTP comes with a Digital Work Permit.”

The benefits list explicitly states the Digital Work Permit does not include the Work-from-Thailand category.

Misunderstanding Four: “You can estimate the employer’s USD 50 million revenue yourself.”

The calculation basis for the revenue threshold follows BOI’s current announcements — don’t determine it yourself; confirm before submitting your application.

FAQ

Q1: What are the full conditions for WFTP?

Three parallel conditions: personal income (average of at least USD 80,000 over two years, or at least USD 40,000 plus a master’s degree) + employer eligibility (listed company / private company operating 3+ years with at least USD 50M revenue / a subsidiary of either) + choose-one-of-three common financial security.

Q2: My employer is an unlisted mid-size company — how do I know if it qualifies?

If your employer is a private company, check whether it has operated for 3+ years and reached USD 50,000,000 in revenue — the calculation basis and supporting documents follow BOI’s current announcements and requirements.

Q3: I’m a freelancer with clients overseas — can I apply?

WFTP tests employer eligibility — for a freelance arrangement, check that condition’s literal wording first; you can also check DTV’s Workcation category (which explicitly covers freelancers, with a financial threshold of THB 500,000).

Q4: Which category should a professional employed by a Thai company use?

Check HSP’s conditions: employment by a Thai or foreign company, higher education institution, research center, or government agency in a targeted industry, with an income structure similar to WFTP’s — the targeted industry list follows BOI, and each category’s conditions are independent.

Q5: Does WFTP come with a work permit and the 17% tax rate?

The Digital Work Permit explicitly excludes the Work-from-Thailand category; the 17% personal income tax applies only to HSP — check the benefits for each category item by item.
